Our car was parked in Guwahati at a friend’s place. We had to pick up the car, get it serviced, and stock up on provisions in Guwahati before the start of the trip. We had two days in Guwahati to do all this.
We had the Inner Line Permit to stay 2 weeks in Arunachal. Travellers diarrhoea caught up with one of us even before we reached Guwahati and we had to spend the first few days indoors except when driving. We also had to cancel/rejig our homestay bookings. By the time we reached Tawang, we were back to our usual routine. At the end of the Arunachal leg, we stopped in Guwahati to get our clothes laundered and supplies replenished. We also rationalised our luggage to create space for two friends who would be joining us for the Bhutan leg.
The Bhutan leg threw up some surprises. We could not travel - even in a self drive vehicle - without a guide. As we had a couple of friends with us for this part of the trip, we could not accommodate the guide in our car. We parked our car in Phuentsoling and hired a car with a driver for the Bhutan tour.
We had originally planned a drive through East and North Sikkim after Bhutan. The Restricted area permit for driving in East Sikkim was made in Rongli as planned and we were able to drive to Zuluk and very close to Nathu La before heading to Gangtok.
By the time we reached Gangtok, we were under cloud cover most of the time. The prediction for North Sikkim was fog, clouds and rain at least for part of the day. The permits for visiting North Sikkim had to be made in Mangan by approaching the local police station through authorised travel agents. We were somewhat weary after a month on the road. Looking at the prospects and difficulties along the way, we decided to cut out the North Sikkim tour and return a few days earlier than planned after shipping the car to Bengaluru from Siliguri.
